Time to kick off the summer with a little road trip to Florida.
We made really good time on the road. We took Route 81 for most of the trip
and overall traffic wasn't bad at all. We have confirmed once again that
Pennsylvania has some of the worst roads we have ever driven on. DW finally got a little
more courage and drove the camper for about 5 hours of the trip. We left on Friday
the 14th and arrived in Perdido Key, FL by Saturday afternoon. DW sister (Teri) lives in Perdido Key
about 3 miles from the campground so it was very convenient.
Seeing family was great. We were pretty tired from the ride but we went out with DW's sister
to a local tavern where one of her friends was playing in the band. The tavern was having
a cajun crayfish boil and DW and Teri had never tried them before so we ordered a platter of them.
They were spicy but good. Alot of work for a little piece of meat. We headed back to Teri's place to swim in her
pool and relax and talk.
Our first day in Perdido Key we took the 3 hour ride to see New Orleans.
We visited famous Bourbon Street and the French Quarters. A store owner recommended a restaurant
for lunch called The Gumbo Shop. It was great food. DH had red beans and rice with sausage, DS had
Fish Gumbo and DW had jambalaya. Great recommendation! Their is still alot of damage in the area.
It was fun to go visit but we will probably not return again. Monday night teri took us to one of
her favorite resturants on the beach called The Beach House in Alabama only 20 minutes away.
The atmosphere was really relaxing with couches on the beach white lights everywhere and even a theatrical moon. Nice touch!
They had great bloody marys and the best grouper sandwich we've had in awhile. Our last night we got fresh crab legs and clams
and cooked out at Teri's and hung out by the pool. We also played a little Texas Hold'em where DH cleaned house and won with almost a royal
straight flush. The time always goes by to fast but we knew we would see her again in a few days on our travels further south.
