Charger, Inverter & Remote On/Off, Transfer Relay
|
This was a very involved project, running the wire from the battery, crawling around
under the coach, working at the back of the electrical compartment, etc... I think it
will be worth it though,.. It will be nice to be able to run the entertainment systems
and refrig without starting the generator. And better still, if my son is watching a movie
when we arrive at the site, I can plug into AC and the relay switches fast enough that
the TV and DVD player keep right on going.
One of the most important parts of this wiring design is that it automatically removes the
Converter/Charger from the circuit when shore power is disconnected
I got the DPDT Relay from Grainger Grainger Item: 5X847 for $23.46 Plus shipping.
I went with the advice from dmartin@newarts.com and used the following wiring diagram.
It works great. H & N represent Hot and Neutral respectively and all grounds were bonded
together.

I used an old computer case and bent a cover for the relay (I was to cheap to pay 15.00 for a cover)

I ran 4ga wire for the inverter and a pair of speaker wire so I can have a switch on the dash,...
I had to hard wire the speaker wire in parallel with the switch in the inverter. Now I can turn
the Inverter on from the driver seat.

This is the in dash switch, I had to remove the instrument cluster and cut this switch in to it.

The 4ga is also hooked into the Progressive Dynamic PD9160 which helps it charge the batteries
better (Less voltage drop).

I would have preferred if the relay was configured so it would be normally on AC power and
when you start the inverter it would switch to it but for some reason the relay would buzz
while switching.... I assume it is because the relay wasn't a big enough load so the inverter
wouldn't sense it.
